Pheromone therapy is one of the easiest ways of changing a dog or cat's behaviour - but Pheromones will not work for all behaviours.
If you are considering purchasing pheromones for your pet, please be sure to read and listen to the information below to determine if pheromones are the correct choice for your pets.
Pheromones are extremely widespread in the animal kingdom. They are like hormones in some aspects. However, while hormones stay within the body of the animal that produces them and thus affect only that animal's behaviour, pheromones are released from one animal and, when detected by another animal of the same species, have a significant effect on the behaviour of that receiving animal.
For instance, most pet owners would know that, when a female dog comes into season, she attracts male dogs from long distances. That happens because she produces large quantities of an attractant pheromone which entire male dogs find alluring. But how much pheromone is that male dog detecting in the breeze? It must be just a molecule or two. So, that means pheromones are very powerful.
The Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP) and Feliway Pheromone (for cats) are nothing to do with sexual attraction but more to do with maternal calming (for dogs) and with territorial comfort (for cats).
The Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP) is used to aid the treatment of anxiety disorders and fears and for establishing puppies and adult dogs into new homes.
For cats, the pheromone, Feliway, is used to stop cats spraying, as well as in assisting cats to become comfortable when moving into a new re
sidence.
The diffusers are literally thirty seconds of work for one month of therapy - plug it in, turn it on and walk away!
There are no side-effects.
The therapeutic effect can be as good as the effect of medication.
Research in France indicates pheromones are 70% effective for anxiety disorders in dogs.
The sprays can be point-specific in their use and application.
The DAP Collar is good for dogs that need calming when outside.
Pheromones such as the Dog Appeasing Pheromone (D.A.P.) and Feliway are wonderful products because they are easy to use and side-effect free.
Pheromones are very effective but not 100% effective. The best results are from using pheromones in combination with other therapies.
