Getting Good Behaviour
from
Problem Pets
A Pet-Fix Seminar at the Animal Welfare League (Gold Coast, Queensland) with Dr Cam Day
Why Should You Attend this Seminar?
If you have a delinquent dog or a paranpoid puss cat then this seminar is for you.
If you find you are always shouting "NO" at your dog and he or she is not responding, then, yes, you need to attend.
Do you want to know how to stop your cat from scratching furniture or from attacking you? We will cover that as well.
Do you find yourself saying "But my dog knows that he or she has done wrong - it looks so guilty. So why does it continue' then you REALLY need to book because you are totally misunderstanding your dog's behaviour.
You should attend this seminar if you want to know the simple science behind creating a humane change in your pet's behaviour by avoiding punishment and focusing on rewarding the behaviours you want.
I am sure you know (least I hope you know) that rewarding good behaviour is much more effective that trying to punish bad behaviour. But .... do you know how to use reward-based training techniques?
Furthermore, do you know how to be absolutely precise about reward-based training techniques with dogs? If you are not precise, then you could be rewarding the wrong behaviour. So does that whet your appetite?
We will also talk about why dogs are different to cats and why cat owners really need to be smart about changing their cat's behaviour.
This seminar is ideally suited to animal trainers and to pet owners, to dog or cat groomers, to vet nurses and to veterinarians - indeed it will be a fascinating trip for anyone with an interest in the science of creating humane behaviour change.
Expected Outcomes:
At the completion of this seminar you will:
Finally understand the difference between positive and negative reinforcement and positive and negative punishment and how each technique has its benefits and disadvantagesr
- Realise why punishment is usually not the preferred technique for creating behaviour change
- Be fascinated to know how you can IQ test your dog and give him a three-number IQ score and why that's important (no that doesn't work for cats!)
- Be able to tell if you dog is an ADHD dog (yes - it does exist with dogs!)
- know why breed differences are so important with dogs and cats when it comes to creating behaviour change
- Learn about simple but rapidly successful techniques such as the circle of commands for dogs and the stepping stone principle for cats and how you can use them to change your pet's behaviour
- Know if and when pheromones and/or medications are indicated for behavioural problems
